What Is Frozen Shoulder?

Frozen Shoulder or Adhesive Capsulitis, is one of the most common causes of shoulder pain. During this condition, the ligaments surrounding the shoulder joint get inflamed. Ligaments become stiff and swollen, resulting in a limited range of movement. It mostly affects only one shoulder, but sometimes it affects both.

Frozen shoulder is often misdiagnosed. It happens that people suffer from a frozen shoulder but doctors diagnose it as shoulder arthritis, even though these conditions may not be connected and can coexist together. Frozen shoulder is specifically about the shoulder joint, while arthritis may refer to multiple, different joints. Another condition that frozen shoulder is often confused with is a rotator cuff injury.

What causes frozen shoulder?

The cause of frozen shoulder is still a mystery and in many cases cannot be identified. However, most people with frozen shoulder have suffered some kind of injury . Frozen shoulder is common in people with diabetes.

What are the signs and symptoms of frozen shoulder?

A symptom is what we experience, feel and/or can report related to our health condition, while signs are what others can observe. For example, pain is usually a symptom, while a swelling could be a sign. The most common symptoms of frozen shoulder are pain and stiffness in the shoulder joint. Signs and symptoms of frozen shoulder usually have three stages and develop gradually. They are initially getting worse and slowly improve within a period of two years.

Three stages of frozen shoulder are:

  • Painful stage – the shoulder develops stiffness, causing pain while moving / using the shoulder, which limits the actual movements. At night, the pain often becomes worse.
  • Frozen/adhesive stage – Stiffness gets worse, limiting the ability to move even more. The pain does not necessarily change much at this stage
  • Thawing stage – The movement range of the frozen shoulder gradually improves. The pain starts to reduce, but recurres from time to time.

How is Frozen Shoulder Diagnosed?

Doctors usually diagnose frozen shoulder based on signs and symptoms and a physical examination. The intensity of frozen shoulder is found through a basic test in which a doctor tries to examine the range of movement and define the intensity of pain. To differentiate the Frozen Shoulder from other conditions like Arthritis, Rotator Cuff Injury or other possible injuries helps a range of medical tests such as X-ray, ultrasound and MRI. Structural problems can only be identified with the help of these tests.
