Scoliosis is a disease that not only creates cosmetic deformity but in severe cases, can cause internal organ damage. Idiopathic Scoliosis is the most common type. (Idiopathic means that the cause is unknown).
- Scoliosis is very common with children aged 10-15, usually due to fast rate of growing. Statistics tell us that it is the leading orthopaedic problem for children of school age
- Women are 8 times more likely to develop Scoliosis than male
- The are could be many causes of Idiopathic Scoliosis but most of them can be addressed with a special preventative measures such as a regular check up, special exercises and specialized natural treatments.
- Scoliosis can, but not always progress. Without effective treatments the curves can increase, even if the person has stopped growing.
Can Scoliosis be Fixed?
Currently there are not many effective treatments that can treat Scoliosis. The most popular bracing and surgery, but none of these treatments are very successful in removing the curve.
Bracing is usually applied for smaller curvatures <40˚. Unfortunately bracing therapy has not been able to achieve permanent results. It is quite taxing for the patients because the brace need to be worn for 23 hours a day. This restricts mobility , stops proper physical development and makes the core muscles quite week. Sport activities and majority of exercises cannot be performed. Many children often experience a strong psychological and emotional trauma from this treatment.
Scoliosis Surgery is a solution when the degree exceeds 40˚ and is considered to be a last resort because of the terrible side effects. It does not succeed with everyone. Some symptoms of scoliosis, such as rip-humps do not go away.
Intensive pain may be expected for many years after surgery. Flexibility and the range of movements are usually quite limited. Additional degenerative conditions can start develop after the surgery. In some cases even after the surgery, progression continues because the cause of the Scoliosis has not been addressed. Nearly half of the number of patients will be legally defined as severely handicapped 20 years post surgery. Sometimes additional surgeries may be needed to address some of the side effects.
Nevertheless, in Fix My Spine we believe that scoliosis can be effectively treated without bracing, surgical or medicinal procedures.
To find an effective solution for any health problem you must always find and address the cause. This called “holistic approach”.
